  此書原系英國作家所著，始於一八六六年，一八九七年作家去世，原作中輟，止於貝多芬一八一六年的階段。後由德人HermannDeiters譯成德 文，並續著；一九〇七年D氏去世，書又中輟。M.H.Riemann於一九一七年續成，全書五大冊，為研究貝多芬最完備詳盡之作。
